There are some very basic things that you need to be sure you are doing with Twitter. That’s why we’re sharing Twitter tips to help you get your tweets on!
If you have been on Twitter for years or if you are brand new, we encourage you to go through this checklist. Over the past few months, Nikol and I have spent hours looking at hundreds of blogs and we have seen a surprising amount of bloggers making these mistakes.
Here are 6 basic Twitter tips for bloggers just like you:
1. You have to be on Twitter
As a blogger, Twitter is a non-negotiable social media platform. The party is on Twitter and, as a blogger, you need to be at the party. If you want to share information, connect with the millions waiting to hear from you, and engage in conversations (and we are assuming that because you blog you do), get on Twitter! If you are not there, you are missing out on an amazing opportunity to grow your reach.
2. Link to your Twitter account – and make sure it works
Nikol and I wanted to connect with bloggers, so we clicked on social media icons to follow and message the bloggers. We were amazed as to how many bloggers had Twitter links that didn’t work and led to 404 Errors. This is terrible! Get your links right! Someone like us might be trying to introduce you to a new opportunity.
3. Don’t be an egghead
A reminder that you need to be a face on Twitter. It is hard for people to connect with you if you are the go-to, smiling, generic Twitter egg. It doesn’t take long to upload a pretty face.
4. Fill out your new profile
In case you weren’t aware, months ago Twitter upgraded to new, beautiful, more full profile pages. Go to your Twitter profile and take advantage of this! You can pin important tweets, add more photos, and in general create a more robust presence for yourself on Twitter. You can be more and connect better as a blogger if you take some time to fill out this information.
5. State in your profile where you are located
You can’t worry too much about online privacy and the potential for cyberstalkers if you are putting yourself out there as a blogger (as we talked about in our Blogging411 episode with Molly on being personal). So put your location in your profile. Regional connections are huge and grossly underestimated by bloggers. Brands care and local matters. Sure, you might be intending to reach a global audience, but you can help yourself a lot by letting people know what city and state you represent.
6. Use it for community
If you are on Twitter, please use it! Tweet, reply, respond…You don’t have to be the most active account out there but do make sure you are taking the time to actually tweet. To get the most mileage out of Twitter, do not just automatically tweet your own articles. Create dialogue, respond to others, get involved in Twitter parties, and share other content. You will be more valuable and interesting this way.
