What I Learned My First 5 Months Fashion Blogging

August 16, 2019 by NC Blogger Network 2 Comments

I am a lifestyle blogger at heart, at The Alisha Nicole. Writing about my personal journey, inspiration, and business and blogging tips come easily to me. But when I decided to create a style based blog for my online shop, Early August, and began as a fashion blogger, it completely took me out of my comfort zone.

I still have a lot to learn but here are a few things I’ve learned in my first 5 months of fashion blogging – Alisha Nicole

I still have a lot to learn but here are a few things I’ve learned in my first 5 months of fashion blogging:

1. Wear what you love and are most comfortable in.

I created Early August for the “everyday girl” and girls like me who feel most comfortable and beautiful in their jeans and t-shirts. It’s what I love and am most comfortable in so 9 times out of 10 that’s what my style posts feature. If you walk like a baby deer in heels, try wearing flats or something you won’t be afraid of falling over in! If you are uncomfortable or don’t like what you’re wearing, it will show in your pictures.

2. Don’t shop outside of your means.

Let’s be real, we all can’t afford Gucci shoes and Prada bags. If you are a Forever21, H&M or Target shopper like I am, wear it with pride! Don’t put yourself in an awkward financial position just for “style”.

3. Natural light is everything.

Try taking pictures outside or somewhere that gets a ton of natural light. This makes your pictures look sharp, vibrant and you won’t have to add a bunch of artificial light when editing. I particularly like taking photos an hour or two before the sun goes down and when there is an overcast.

4. Try out different angles and poses.

You are showing off the outfit so try different poses that will give your readers the full outfit experience. I love taking a few straight on pics and then a couple from the side. A blogger who is AMAZING at this is Sheryl from Walk In Wonderland.

5. Don’t forget the details!

Things like accessories or that gorgeous handmade bag are hard to see in a full outfit picture. Try taking some close-ups to show off those details.

6. Don’t go crazy with your backgrounds.

Keep your backgrounds simple so that it doesn’t take away your readers focus on your outfit. Try shooting in front of trees or buildings that are not too busy.

7. Find inspiration from your “sister brands.”

Trying to figure out the right pose, lighting, or how to edit your photos can be frustrating. Your sister brands, in this case, would be those fashion bloggers that you admire and are where you hope to one day be. Make a list of helpful tips that you can find from looking through their old posts, BUT PLEASE, don’t compare yourself to them! They are to be simply looked up to for inspiration.

8. Don’t forget to actually write.

Yes, your style posts will be mostly pictures but don’t forget you actually have to form a few sentences too. One thing I love about some of my favorite fashion bloggers is that they always include links to where they purchased their clothing and explain why or how they put that particular outfit together. Also, you can write about what inspired that outfit, if it’s perfect for a certain event or outing or maybe focus on a specific piece and talk about that. Blogging = Writing.

9. Have Fun!

If you really enjoy what you’re doing it shouldn’t be all stuffy and serious. Have fun, try out different styles and try not to get so caught up in creating the perfect picture!

About Alisha

She helps creative women turn their passion into a business without the stress and confusion through her blog and one-on-one coaching sessions. Alisha noticed there were a lot of women just like her who desperately wanted to turn their passion into a business. So she took what she learned (and is still learning) over the years through trial and error and created The Alisha Nicole. Whether it’s personal, inspirational or business/blogging posts, her main goal for the site is to inspire women to simply live rather than exist and create the life they’ve always dreamed of.

I wholeheartedly agree with number 7… sometimes it can be hard to find inspiration and ideas, so looking at other sister brands are a big help!

1 plan out your workouts for the week — so you have a plan it helps keep you accountable. I look at my schedule for the week and figure out what classes I can take.

2 MEAL PREP — if you live a busy life, it is so important to think ahead and plan your meals out in advance so you aren’t tempted to eat out/unhealthy foods.

3 DONT BE AFRAID TO TRY SOMETHING NEW — this is so important, if you find what you love it will be the best part of your day.

I am by no means a fitness expert, these are just a few tips that have helped me along the way.

This iconic church stands in New Bern and has plenty of quiet spots on its beautiful grounds for reflection. It also has a playground for the kids. WE ARE BLACK WOMEN.....we build...we don’t tear down other BLACK WOMEN! We have felt the pain of being torn down and we have decided that we will be deliberate about building others!
All too often, we find it easier to criticize each other instead of building each other up! With all of the negativity going around, let’s spread something positive! Upload one picture of yourself.....ONLY you. Then tag as many sisters to do the same. Let’s build ourselves up instead of tearing ourselves down 💕COPY and PASTE💕

It’s not my job to educate you about racism, I’m tired and exhausted. I’m a young Black educated woman who is aware of my privilege which hasn’t stopped me from experiencing Racism, so are many of my Black educated young Black sisters and brothers. I’m not looking for a pity party but CHANGE. So I’m going to use my energy on sharing ways to uplift our community. When a Black woman speaks up don’t tell her she’s aggressive while my White pairs are addressed as confident. Posting a black square as solidarity is nice but Brands- Pay Black Creators and stop asking us to work for exposure or products when we use our resources, time, money and energy to create the same content. We shouldn’t have to work twice as hard to be heard, visible and taken care off. We deserve to be treated equally. I shouldn’t have to ask to see people who like me on your Instagram feed, travel campaigns or campaigns in general. We shouldn’t have to ask for this things, it’s the bare minimum. I’m appreciative of the brands who have done this all along. We can create change together🤎 #amplifymelatedvoices #supportBlackWomen #SupportblackCreators #Payblackcreators
